The Amazing Health Benefits of Coconut Water

People have been raving about the health benefits of coconut water forever. You can't help but wonder if it's worth all of the hype.

The fact is, health trends come and go, but coconut water's value is withstanding the test of time. And rightly so.

Its nutritional value far exceeds that of many promoted healthy beverages currently on the market.

Mother Nature's tropical cocktail is getting much buzz now. But why?

Well not only is it a super-hydrating,  energy boosting miracle beverage coconut chock full of electrolytes.

OK, miracle beverage may be a stretch, but that really depends on who you ask.

While some experts are excited about the healing qualities of coconut water, others aren't that impressed.

Some scientists have argued that it's barely better than soda. You be the judge.

Coconut Water & Heart Health

One of the major health benefits of coconut water is its ability to help maintain good cardiovascular health.

Studies have shown that individuals coping with high blood pressure generally have low potassium levels. Coconut water, considering its high potassium concentration, can help regulate blood pressure in the body.

Additionally, research has also indicated coconut water may help increase HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol. What could be beneficial about increasing cholesterol? Well, HDL cholesterol is commonly known as the "good" cholesterol.

It acts as a scavenger and removes LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol , the "bad" kind. Then it transports this bad cholesterol to the liver for reprocessing.

HDL cholesterol also maintains the health of blood vessel walls, preventing such complications as atherosclerosis. All of these functions, together, ward off heart attacks and strokes

Get Glowing Skin with Coconut Water

The cytokins & lauric acid content of this beverage largely contribute to its magnificent effects on the skin.

These nutrients have proven to help balance the body's pH (which we've learned is rather important for overall well being), strengthen and hydrate connective tissue, and minimize aging of skin cells.

One does not have to consume the drink in order the reap the health benefits of coconut water. Try applying it topically; it refreshes the skin too.

If applied regularly, it helps with wrinklesstretch markscelluliteeczema, and age spots. All reasons why I keep my refrigerator stocked with this stuff!

Sports Drink Alternative??

The high nutrient content of coconut water makes it a great treat for the body. But are these nutrients enough to replace the need for manufactured sports drinks? That depends on who you ask....

For dieters, the considerably lower sodium and sugar content is rather attractive. The potassium and calcium levels, alone, make it a better choice for rehydration after a workout...well a moderate workout.

Nutritionist, Monica Reinagel, noted that the health benefits of coconut water, as they pertain to electrolyte replenishment, are suitable for those that engage in mild/moderate activity. Don't let that make you return yours to the shelves. Most people do not need electrolyte replenishment in the first place.

However, "if you're a marathoner, if you're doing Bikram yoga -- and this is really about sweat replacement, relying on coconut water to replenish your lost sodium is not a good idea."

The nutritionist maintains that it is basically a matter of personal preference. It certainly will not harm you.
